Our customer enquired about a unique garden room to fit in with their ongoing landscaping works. After talking through their requirements, it became clear that it was important to them to be able to utilise the roof space to generate as much electricity as possible from solar.
After several iterations we settled on a design that featured overhangs to the front and side to extend the roof area, allowing extra area for PV panels.
The customer owns a business installing solar setups and wanted a roof construction method that they were familiar with that allows simple installation of the panels. We used Kingspan trapezoidal insulated roof panels which are self supporting over the span required, and the solar panel supporting tracks can be screwed straight into their metal skin. It is possible to fit panels to our usual rubber membrane roof if required.
We worked together with the customer deciding which of us was responsible for the various aspects of the electrical install. They installed their own consumer unit, solar panels and inverter, we fitted the internal cable runs, lighting and sockets.
This solar setup is now part of the home system and adds to the generating capacity of the house roof panels. The whole system now allows them to power their home and charge their EV without using power from the grid, thanks to Tesla Powerwall battery storage systems.
